Sushi lover’s heaven.

Wish I had known about this place sooner. Picked up a couple of sushi packs for a friend visiting from out of town, and I was impressed by both the quality and pricing. I usually get my sashimi-grade fillets from Maruichi or New Deal Fish Market, but this spot was cheaper than both (All of that for under $40). While it doesn’t offer premium cuts like Chu Toro from Maruichi, the quality was still better than New Deal.

The Kinmedai and sweet prawn were our favorites, but from the smaller packs, the surf clam & squid salad was really good. The mayo sauce mixed with fish roe had that nostalgic taste I’ve been missing from Sapporo sushi in Korea—creamy, briny, and full of umami.

The only mistake I made was coming in right at opening, so the selection was fairly limited. Next time, I’d definitely come back after noon to explore their full range of offerings.

Great sashimi options. The owners are kind and can slice fish chunks for free.
Some other food items such as udon are more expensive than other Asian supermarkets.

位於波士頓Newton的日本生魚片專賣店,裡面新鮮的生魚片和生食級海鮮,還有其他日本商品,可以客製化生魚片丼,新鮮好吃。
This Japanese sashimi specialty store located in Newton, Boston, sells fresh sashimi, raw-grade seafood, and other Japanese products. You can customize sashimi donburi, which is fresh and delicious.

I cannot recommend this business highly enough. Not only was the fish fresh and absolutely delicious, the owners were friendly, helpful, and endlessly patient with me as I tried to figure out what and how much to buy in order to make sushi for my husband’s birthday dinner. An all around wonderful experience!

I heard about Sakanaya very recently and was excited to load up on some fresh sashimi. We tried a variety of items and here's what we thought.

Delicious, would definitely get again
- Argentinian red shrimp are really nice and succulent.
- Tako wasa tastes like restaurant quality and is only $3 -- definitely a good deal!
- Salmon scraps are good, great for poke bowls.

Maybe would get again
- Whole salmon was pretty good, not much fishiness.

Wouldn't get again
- Sweet shrimp were not super sweet/fresh-tasting. Argentinian red shrimp was much better.
- Bluefin tuna toro was a miss. It had a lot of chewy pieces of fat. Maybe I picked the wrong piece.

I would get the Argentinian red shrimp, tako wasa, and salmon scraps again!

I decided to buy salmon, salmon roe, and fatty tuna belly. This place is so fresh and I think everybody should drop by and give this place a shot!

What…?

How have I not visited this small but mightily-awesome establishment a lot sooner? This tiny Japanese fish market is just a couple minutes away and I’ve somehow failed to visit them until very recently. I guess it has a lot to do with not craving fish for the last year BUT when the first hint of desire for seafood returned, their name immediately popped up in my mind.

I’ve been back several times since the initial visit. Their variety of sashimi grade fish as well as specials in their frozen section (fish trimmings and fish heads) definitely suit my personal culinary preferences. On top of that, they actually provide a chirashi service (for a dollar) where they slice the fish you purchased and lay it atop sushi rice for you. This allows you to fully customize your chirashi bowls according to what you crave in the very moment.

Friendly people, fresh ingredients, decently priced. Definitely recommend and can’t wait to be back again soon!
