Fue escenario de las primeras fiestas de la alta sociedad de Newport, antes de la llegada de los Vanderbilt, y la única residencia familiar durante todo el año. fue construida en 1985 por el comerciante William Shephard Wetmore, un enamorado del arte italiano que hizo traer desde Europa parte de los elementos de la casa como la biblioteca o el comedor renacentista. Se la considera un hito de la arquitectura victoriana estadounidense, levantada en granito y repleta de muebles, papeles pintados y cerámicas de las tendencias de diseño más exclusivas de la última mitad del s. XIX. La casa esta abierta al público como museo.

This is a great mansion to tour. This one was built in 1855 and significantly understated compared to The Breakers.

Still a very impressive place and the woodwork is exceptional. There are several rooms (Library and Dining) that feature fantastic wood carvings from a 19th century Italian woodcarver. According to an employee there, there are only 5 rooms in the U.S. still preserving this woodcarver’s work and 2 of the rooms are in this mansion.

One of the manors to see in Newport. It's on the same level as Breakers or Marble house, but it's still worth a visit.

This is an impressive place, deserving a tour amongst all the other mansions albeit a less critical mansion to see. The home has interesting history in that it housed a family through all 12 months of the year, the single dad went on to become a well-regarded politician, and the children stayed on at the house with one daughter finally passing in the later1900s. This is also the only tour we went on that was led by a live and very knowledgable tour guide. She not only offered fine details of the home, family and restoration but also had a wealth of knowledge to answer virtually any questions the group asked. It was surprisingly intimate and welcoming. Well done!

Chateau-sur-Mer is a stunning property that feels remarkably different than the other mansions. Every room you walk into transports you into a different emotional place. Stroll around the ground and think about the stories that the trees could share with you.

My recommendation is to purchase an annual membership. There are different levels that you can choose from to fit your family situation. This will not only save you money, but it is also a tax-deductible gift. Also, purchase your tickets/membership online. It is easy and will save you time when you first arrive.
