I entered the store before 8 PM PST and completed my purchases. When I attempted to exit through the same door I entered, I was informed that the door was locked. I was told I would need to exit through the opposite side of the store and walk outside in the cold with my purchased items to reach my vehicle.

Concerned for my safety, I asked the associate near the door if she could contact the manager for assistance. She called her manager, Roderick, who instructed her to tell me that there was nothing that could be done. I was told that if I wanted to speak to someone else, I could go to customer service. It was clear that Roderick had no interest in helping or speaking with me directly, so I proceeded to the customer service desk.

There, I spoke with another manager, John. Unfortunately, John didn't fully understand my concern. While he allowed me to exit through the door I originally entered, he made a point of telling me to "plan accordingly" next time. Well, John, I can assure you that my future "planning" will include avoiding this store altogether and opting for a more customer-friendly grocery.

Neither Roderick nor John demonstrated any basic understanding of customer service. The policy of locking doors at a certain time is clearly meant to protect the store’s assets and staff, but when I expressed that my concern was also about my safety, it was brushed aside.

If I could give this experience a lower rating, I absolutely would.

Maybe the worst location of one of the worst companies in America. Kroger has destroyed a company that I once was proud to say started in Portland. The history behind this location is extensive and interesting, and I'm sad that I can't in good conscious return to this store again.

Every couple months I shop here, forgetting what the last time was like. They're deceptive. They make it extremely difficult to get the prices they advertise. They treat every customer like a criminal. The final straw today was using self checkout. An item didn't scan, and I realized it as I got too close to the bag for the system's comfort. I had already brought it back to scan, but the system scolded me and then proceeded to force me to watch the video of myself. Then, it wouldn't proceed without someone coming over to clear it. She got into it and made us stand there and watch the video again. It's embarrassing, and it's not worth shopping here (yes, shopping, giving Fred Meyer money, not stealing) anymore.

I left everything there and went over to New Seasons, happy to pay more for a better experience. But you know what? Milk was over a dollar cheaper here. Not everything is cheaper, but it's worth slightly higher prices to not be treated this way. And if it's not? I can shop at Safeway for a lot less or Winco for even less, and they both treat me better every single time I walk into one of their stores.

Couldn’t ask for a more delightful time shopping at Fred’s this morning. Shannon (fish counter) was fun, engaging and so thoughtful. Melissa at the checkout couldn’t have been sweeter and more good natured as well. And, the security guy at the exit - wow, even had a joke for us. Great morning, great staff!
