I don't know much about the fish market that occurs. I'm guessing in the morning sometime....but what I do know is about the pier attached to it. This is a great place to go and relax also to get a awesome view of downtown and the bay. With Coronado across the bay and views as far as Mexico.

Being an early riser (visiting from the east coast) I was looking for something to do early on a Saturday morning and found this spot. Unfortunately I was staying in a hostel so I couldn't take advantage of the amazing deals on fresh fish but I was able to get some cevicie, take some pictures, and people watch. I arrived about 6:45 am and was one of the first 10 people in line. The person behind me graciously said I could go take pictures and he would hold my spot. By the time 8am rolled around the line was pretty lengthy but everyone got in pretty quickly, just have an idea of which booth you are targeting. Come with a cooler, they will provide ice and for a small fee/lb they will also fillet your fish purchases.

There were separate lines for crabs, urchin, fish booths (obviously), prepared foods ready to eat, and a processing tent. The last two on the list were at the far end of the pier. Enjoy the amazing deals and fresh fish if you can!

Really great prices for seafood from what we saw. $8 per pound for whole sheepshead and $8 for bigeye tuna loin. They also had food vendors and a fish cleaning station. There was also a sea lion on the side waiting for scraps in the water ?

They sell old rotten tunas. They get them from some 3rd party fishing company. Bought 2 large fish a while back and got home and noticed gills were already removed and missing, and flesh was old stinky. They sell old fish. They just keep these fish on ice and freeze and refreeze multiple times and flip them here at this market. I made a mistake thinking these are local fisherman but they're just flippers, flipping whatever they can get their hands on. Literally took the fish back and dumped them at the processing plant next to the dock. Spoke to David Haworth who was at first very apologetic but later came up with all types of excuses to avoid responsibility. Avoid this market at all cost, they sell old seafood to average locals. Surprised local health department hasn't looked into this entire business.

As an individual who has traveled around the world, it's pretty sad that one can find better, cheaper, and more fresh selection in 3rd world country fish markets than here.

LOVE. This place made me feel like I was traveling in my own hometown. All of the vendors and fishermen are so kind, many of the fishermen are also the ones that also sell the fish on Saturdays at this market. I've tried the wahoo and the manchong fish from the first vendor as you enter on the left, both were SO delicious and fresh! The boats go out to catch halfway between here and hawaii, and it's always good stuff. Even if you don't buy anything, it's really nice to walk around and just chat or to watch the guys on the boat fileting! Prices are great too.
